Internet Explorer offers three forms of home page, about:blank, custom or default. About:blank displays a blank white screen or no homepage, this is the most basic option available. Custom home pages are the most useful as this will load your favourite webpage on start up or any time you click the “Home” icon. Finally the default option is points to Microsoft’s own msn.com. You can choose any option you want but many people advise setting your home page to a search engine such as Google.


Steps to Remove About:Blank from Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Highlight about:blank in the address bar and type in the full web address of your new desired home page
  3. Click on “Tools” (if this is not visible press the “Alt” key on the keyboard) or click on the Settings “Cog Icon” and choose Internet Options
  4. In the Home Page section under the General Tab click the “User Current” Button and then click “OK”. This will have set your home page to the website you wanted and removed the About:Blank from Internet Explorer.Internet Options ScreenShot
  5. If you want to have more than one home page you can manually enter additional websites in the Home Page box pressing “Enter” after each one.
  6. You can now Close Internet Explorer and test.

If you have followed the above and the home page will not change from about:blank (or any other web address) then unfortunately you have become the victim of Browser Hijacking. The About:Blank Browser Hijack is not a virus as such but the most common browser hijack currently on the internet.

The About:Blank Hijacker installs what is known as a Browser Helper Object deep into the main settings of Internet Explorer. Unwanted BHO’s are the biggest cause of an Internet Browser running slow as these consumes excessive system resources as the website loads. An infected computer will display the About:Blank webpage whenever the internet browser is opened. The BHO’s can avoid detection by most antivirus and anti spyware programs.

About:Blank Removal Process

To permanently remove unwanted Browser Helper Objects’s and other About:Blank Hijackers it’s important to thoroughly clean your system of all spyware, including any hidden installer components that may be able restore the pest later on:

  1. First close all your browser windows and clear your internet temporary files by selecting Start > Run, type ‘cleanmgr’ and click OK. For Win7 type ‘cleanmgr’ into Start > Search programs and files
  2. Then scan your system with ADWCleaner & Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 and remove all the infections it finds.
  3. Reboot your PC.
  4. Immediately scan your system a second time with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and remove any remaining infections.
